Worry is the mind’s attempt to stay safe

Apprentice Again and again lately, I have been reminded of the observation that when one strays from the natural state, one suddenly has a problem with one’s boss. My life circumstances lately have been very trying to me.

Khandro Déchen We are sorry and will remember you in our practice.

Apprentice They have been great stimuli to my practice.

Khandro Déchen Excellent, then you have the signs of success with your practice.

Apprentice My refuge in my practice is a very welcome respite from the heavy coat of worry that I wear. What amazes me is how instantly I put it on again.

Khandro Déchen It is pointless to worry about things about which you can do nothing. Better to fergeddaboudit. Worry is the mind’s attempt to stay safe. If you have concerns about something which leads to a useful course of action then that is obviously different, but it is hard for me to be specific as I’m not sure of the areas of your worry.

Apprentice: And again and again.

Khandro Déchen Yes, the mind is limitless in its attempts to maintain this illusion of safety and security.

Apprentice Ngakma Yeshé tells me I should view this habit with humour.

Khandro Déchen Good advice
