By paying the subscription you are agreeing to become a member of the charitable company Sang-ngak-chö-dzong.
(UK Registered company number 11634542, UK Registered charity number 1181153)
All apprentices are expected to contribute in this way to the costs of administering Sangha activity.
As a member you have the right to attend general meetings of the company and vote on resolutions at such meetings or either in person or by proxy, and also the right to access those areas of the website reserved for apprentices and members.
Rules of membership of Sang-ngak-chö-dzong
You also guarantee to pay any creditors of the charity a sum not exceeding £1, in the case that the company is liquidated.
(This is the equivalent of, but an alternative to, being a shareholder of a company. Under charity law the company cannot have shareholders, but in return its members have only the very limited financial liability outlined above; and instead of purchasing a shareholding you pay an annual fee.)
Your subscription as a member pays for basic administration costs that enable the charity to exist and provide the framework for lineage activity in the sphere of realised manifestation. These costs include registration and accountancy fees, book-keeping costs and website maintenance. All other charitable activity depends on additional voluntary donations and other fundraising effort.
From a legal perspective, membership of Sang-ngak-chö-dzong is entirely voluntary, but from a practice perspective it is expected by your teachers that you will contribute in this way as part of your commitment to apprenticeship. Most teachers have asked to be notified if their apprentices default on membership. Should you find membership a financial burden, then you should discuss this matter with them. Special arrangements may be made, but only in the most exceptional circumstances and subject to your teachers’ agreement. (This paragraph does not apply to any members who are not also apprentices or disciples of the lineage.)
