The initial display
Apprentice How I can relate with
unsatisfactoriness without dwelling on it and becoming
miserable?
Lamas Relate with the initial
display of what you see—the very first glimpse. After that
glimpse, simply abandon the commentary. Usually there is the
initial insight, which is followed by a referential
impulse—and then one begins to manipulate in terms of
converting impressions into a pattern of concretised concept. If
you can simply observe the initial flickering of
unsatisfactoriness, if you can remain with the freshness and
clarity of what you experience rather than the commentary, you
will not require misery. The most important factor is disowning
experience—in respect of referentiality. Eventually even
the most insignificant experiences can be referentially disowned,
and spaciousness becomes the predominant characteristic of
whatever arises.
